DAY 8" Cross Country Challenge  TOTAL MILES RIDDEN  MILES CURRENT LEG
(Winnemucca, NV to Battle Mountain, NV) On Sunday, June 5, 2005 in San Francisco, CA, "Poppa Mel", Ben's grandfather, embarked on a 3,796-mile 52-day bike trek across America in honor of Ben. Mel is riding with a group of cyclists on a supported "Cross Country Challenge" ride with America by Bicycle. 
Mel had a great day today, "It was a short, easy ride" he explained. Despite a late start, the short ride and a fast pace allowed the riders to finish by lunch and relax during the afternoon. With his cell phone still out of commission Mel has resorted to contacting the family with use of a phone card, but hopes to replace his cell when they reach Salt Lake City in a few days.
